The car park for the lower entrance to Harlech Castle. But that 'watergate' entrance is now closed down.

A refreshing lack of signs of any sort, so no charges & seems no restrictions.

It's flat & can manage longer vehicles

No other parking spaces in use overnight.

It's near Harlech's seldom used rail station & level crossing. Slept through any noise there may have been. The access road is hardly used.

Turn right & you can challenge your calves to 'The Steepest Street In The World'* to the castle entrance (left for slighty easier walk, or assume the bus-stop sorts it)

The only pub that was open in Harlow is just over the rail track & has good simple meals. A supermaket (8am-10pm) & well kept public toilets are also just across rails.

The parking spot even offers the fortified watergate for the castle. Seems built 1290s. You can walk inside its atmospheric hoisting port for vessels.
*Some upstart NZ street recently stole the title, when Guiness Records compared centerlines. However walking off-center can still bag you a world record after breakfast.

Lovely free park up. One other van parked the other side and plenty of room for others! Lots of public toilets close by (Wales are good with these, but not bins!) Steps up to the castle are currently closed but other short routes nearby, so had a lovely visit, followed by ice cream in the small town centre and a lovely walk with amazing views. Route to the beach opposite, on the other side of the railway and Premier shop open till 10pm. Pub unfortunately closed on Tuesdays! Never mind.

Perfect location for exploring the town of Harlech plus the beautiful beach. Peaceful night, shared with one other van but lots of room for more. Sadly, no bin.

Amazing views underneath the castle, pub opposite which was not open Monday-Tuesday in the winter months. Short walk to the beach and public clean toilets opposite car park by the queens pub. Great level grounds for motor homes.

  • 4/5

Nice car park without charge right at tha side of the castle no toilet, water, or waste removal.but great spot for overnight stop.

  • 5/5

Small parking area on hard standing, fairly level. Ideal free spot for visiting the castle. Although next to railway line level crossing the trains stop running at 10:00 and the first one at 07:09 so a nice quiet night. Premier stores & pub just across the road

  • 5/5

Stopped here tonight. Lovely and quiet. Great views. Pub across the road has decent priced drinks and there is a Premier Shop too. Also a leisure centre for swimming etc. plus public toilets. Great stop.

  • 5/5

Lovely stop over but came from the East Side which was very narrow steep road. Stay safe and come from the seaside. Great fish and chip shop nearby and shop/toilet as mentioned before. Shop has two bins outside too, not ideal for large bags. Leave no trace, the area is lovely be good to keep this site.

Stayed 1 night 05/03/23 exactly as described in previous comments, train noise didn't bother us, nice meal in the pub Y Branwen last night, a great stop over, and of course free of charge.

  • 5/5

staying here tonight seems absolutely fine,

stayed there for the night. public toilets open in the day and a premier shop for breakfast buttys. great spot for the night

Brilliant spot, was initially going to park in the golf club carpark but found this after visiting the nearby pub and speaking to the locals. Very flat, space for bigger vehicles. Yes, the alarm for the level crossing is loud. If it's going to bother you then don't stay here. Simple.

Very nice place to stay directly below the castle! About a 10 minute steep walk up to the castle if you want to go in it’s £8 an adult but definitely worth it! The alarm for the train is very loud and does go off in the morning and around 11pm at night but all things considered for a private space like this is didn’t matter.

  • 4/5

Perfect spot, sheltered directly below Harlech Castle. Cafe (with toilets) 20 meters past level crossing opens at 9am. Also Cafe and toilets at the Leisure Center on the far side of the main road (turn left at the Premier Shop opposite car park, then second left). Leisure center car park for the beach, £2 parking fee. £2 showers when pool open - closed due to lack of lifeguard.

Nice quiet place right below the impressive Harlech castle. We stayed one night with our 6m camper. Flat area. Trains run only now and then.

  • 3/5

Nice free spot, no signs preventing overnight stops. Stayed in 8m Motorhome with one other campervan. Mostly quiet, odd car and train passes, level crossing alarm can get a little annoying, last alert was 11.45pm. 10-15 min walk to the beach which is huge also has many sand dunes to explore.

Great little spot that provided us with some shelter on a very windy night when loads of campsites were flooded, so we didn’t have much choice of where to stay! Felt safe, level ground and no signs to say we couldn’t park there. We enjoyed a walk to the beach and up a very steep narrow road to the castle and a little coffee shop in the morning. There were even some public toilets up there although we didn’t check them out so not sure of cleanliness etc. As always, take your rubbish with you when you leave - this spot was nice and clean already.
