here on 14th August there's a hand made sign up regarding no overnight parking so we won't be staying over but the place is worth a stop off if in the area

Read the official sign where there was no mention of no overnight parking and so I paid my £2 by text to stay. A lady resident from English Heritage came along this evening and explained that no overnight parking signs are coming and showed me her official email confirming this. Complaints of late night noise, children climbing the abbey walls, camper vans coming and going during the night.

Het is niet de bedoeling om hier met een camper te overnachten. Na gesprek met een bewoonster, die mij heeft uitgelegd dat het niet de bedoeling is om op de parkeerplaats van een heritagesite te overnachten, zijn wij vertrokken. Ik heb haar beloofd dit op deze site te melden.

Great spot right by the Abbey, lots of room, 3 other vans and us , then 2 more arrived very late. Would definitely stay again.

Mooie rustige locatie in de natuur, en mooie sfeer bij de abdij uit 1190 a.d. Om de 2 pond te betalen per SMS bericht, niet vergeten om 0044 ervoor te toetsen als je niet uit Engeland komt. Anders wordt het bericht (en betaling) niet verzonden. Weet niet of er veel gecontroleerd wordt maar de opbrengsten zijn voor het behoud en onderhoud van de abdij. Dochter was wel bang voor abdijgeesten ;-)

we arrived in the early hours (4am) enroute to Scotland for a quick kip. car park was fairly full with 5 spaces taken. however we quickly parked up and spent a peaceful 4 hours snoozing. Nice flat car park.

Make sure that you head for Abbey Lane - Google maps took us down a lane that was almost impossible to get out of (long wheel base Sprinter). A beautiful spot - really nice walk along the river into town. People swimming in some slow running parts, but other bits were shallow and more fast running. The ruins are lovely. Would definitely recommend.

Amazing spot. Flat, quiet, well away from roads, scenic. Moved here at about 1am after trying to sleep at one of the laybys a little further up the road. best decision ever made. Why are those laybys even on the app when somewhere this much better is just metres up the road!

Toller Platz. Am besten jemanden von den Englischen oder schottischen Campern fragen/bitten, ob sie per SMS die 2 Pounds zahlen können und man gibt ihnen das Geld. Als Deutscher geht leider nichts per SMS durch. Mehrmals probiert. Ein schöner und sauberer Platz. Bitte auch so hinterlassen!

2nd time I've been here. only once did I stay overnight. attempted to pay the £2 donation/fee but my ( Giffgaff ) phone wouldn't send it. maybe this happens to everyone who has a fixed monthly payment. 5 other vans here who have stayed overnight. including two at 7 metres in length.

Stayed here last night 11th May and what a fab spot! £2.00 parking fee sent by phone, easy peasy. No problem with overnight stays, very quiet and peaceful. Went for a late night walk around the ruins but didn't see any ghosties, disappointing. Few walkers next morning, no issues whatsoever. No bins so please take rubbish away with you. Will definitely be back!

Lovley location, perfect after a long drive. Very peaceful it is next to a farm so the noise of animals in the morning was great. No disturbance, I have added the details regarding paying, please donate the £2. No bins so please take your rubbish and respect the area. Access isn't great coming from barnard Castle due to a sharp hairpin (we are LWB sprinter) so best to access when still light.

We stayed here for the night parking next to the abbey enough room for around 6 motorhomes brilliant stop over definitely recommended for you ghost hunters out there lol

Finding this place was a true blessing! After a 12h drive and being caught in October’s storm, I couldn’t have asked better than some countryside peace and no light pollution. Breakfast and coffee in the ruins was the cherry on top. Another motorhome came spending the night here, however plenty of space to breath and park levelled. I’d come back for no other reason than the spot itself, magic!

Really cool spot and history. Me and my partner got a bit spooked though and didn't stay overnight as planned! Once darkness came, lots of rustling from inside the abbey, followed by gravel scraping footsteps and eerily loud banging on the ground coming from right behind our van door! After triple checking no one was there and the sounds continuing, we left immediately :') beautiful place though

Completely perfect! Beautiful location, nice walk to Barnard Castle along river. No facilities so make sure you’re self contained, if this is spoiled / littered it will be lost. Please pay the £2 donation by text. We had a lovely peaceful night sleep, one other camper when we arrived and another arrived in the night and left first thing.

Never parked so close to a castle. Great views ( photo opportunity) and excellent walks. At night you can hear the sound of the river running behind the castle. Great for walks and pet friendly. It does say it’s free but you can pay the National trust a donation for the upkeep which we did

Fantastic place to stay. We stayed last night and were the only ones. Beautiful views, very quiet and peaceful. We stayed here last year and it's as beautiful as we remembered. It might be a bit tight for large motorhomes.

I can confirm what all the reviews have said about this being a lovely and quiet spot. We got a usable signal on Virgin. Several cars came and went - mostly dog walkers. One other motorhome stayed the night.

Great stop. Fairly quiet. A couple of other vans stayed the night. Odd car in and out. Mobile signal wise. Vodafone didn't work at all, EE and O2 reasonable.

Only marking 1 star down because we couldn't get signal even with our 4G booster and had work the next morning! Otherwise it's a stunning spot. it's an English Heritage site so sign on the gate says payment of £2 by phone for non English Heritage members.

Lovely little area to park up, little bit of phone signal on EE, nothing on 3... couple other campers parked up too so we felt safe! Nothing much in the way of shops etc nearby

Stopped here for one night, another camper there too. Very peaceful night, nice views. Few houses very nearby but no issues from them at all, farmers out early in the morning with their tractors but all said good morning.

Lovely place to park, the entrance is a bit tight over a cattle grid. There is another gate you could open if necessary. Our vehicle is 2.3metres wide. Room for about 4 to 5 motorhomes.

Stayed here last night. Very nice quiet park up. Flat car park, we were the only ones here. Lots of dog walkers until late in the evening but no problems with anyone. Overlooked by row of houses but park the right way and you forget they are there. Next to the Abbey and only a short walk to the river.

Stayed last night. Few Dog walkers early evening then quiet. Great place to stay for the night right next to the old Abbey. Almost too good to be true but it isn’t.

Great spot ,locals are informative about the abbey they are also trying to stop people staying overnight. Hopefully this wont happen if people are quiet and respectful of the area .

Quiet peaceful, flat park up for the night, underneath the shadow of Egglestone Abbey. Great to explore the ruins from the carpark then head down to the stream and onto the river.
