Right in the middle of Manifold Way, no services and enough space for 8 vans easily. The approach roads can be quite narrow. Close to Thor’s Cave, well worth a wander.
Access is easier from Grindon.
Not suitable for larger vans (over 7m) due to access roads.

Great, flat, quiet spot. Road is narrow and steep from both directions, but I'd say the road to the west is the easier of the two. I came in from the west on an April Saturday and out to the east on Sunday afternoon and didn't meet anyone either time ... perhaps I was lucky?

  • 5/5

Good parking. Nice walks but gets quite steep up to the cave. Nice and quiet during the night

  • 4/5

peaceful spot, only one local horserider aggressively damanding if we were staying the night, but nothing came of it. close walk to this cave. feel asleep listening to the river.

  • 5/5

Stunning little secluded spot. Great walks, good access to thors cave. River was dried up or somewhere else. Pretty steep hills either side. Quiet except for birdsong.

  • 5/5

No signal and horse flies were awful but a stunning place. Thors cave was a beautiful walk. Not many cars around even for a Saturday night. would stay there again but 16% hill on single track road isn't for the feint hearted!

  • 4/5

Absolutely no signal but that's expected from the location. Quite large parking area with no signs. Due to the size it can feel slightly exposed to the cyclists, dog walkers, and the occasional unicyclist but otherwise very nice and flat. There is a nearby river but we couldn't find a way down to it.

been here last week and i can say me and my family had an amazing 1 night stay over. the sky was amazing over night, nice people around here that passed, lots of visitors, its getting quieter after 7pm. 5 stars from me♥️♥️

  • 5/5

    Such a beautiful peaceful place

  • 5/5

We stayed here last night, yes it was Easter Bank Holiday, so very busy on the trails, the drive there is “interesting” and NOT for big motor homes, you have been warned. As said it is a popular walking biking track, stunning views, Thors Cave is a 20-30 minute stroll. Very quiet through the night just us and two other vans there. We had a brilliant nights rest. No phone signal no services.

  • 5/5

Very quiet. Stayed in my car. Only 2 other vans parked there. Loads of space and mostly flat. About 20 minute walk to Thor’s Cave. No signal until you go to the top of a hill.

  • 5/5

fantastic place. we stayed Sunday night so was very quiet. only camper there. a few cars for dog walking early evening and early morning. such a peaceful night. short walk to thors cave. no signal at all at parking place but plenty at the top of the cave. hairpin bends coming down to the carpark so our 7.5m van had to take it slow. we went back up towards Grindon and that was a lot easier.

  • 5/5

This is a very quiet location with absolutely no phone signal, so quieter still. It's right on the Manifold Trail, a dismantled railway line that's now a track suitable for hiking and biking along the bottom of the valley, with many hiking only tracks off up the valley sides. At one end of the trail is a cycle hire selling ice creams, at the other are the Wetton Mill tea rooms. Great location.

  • 3/5

Great spot, totally off grid but be careful, I had someone banging on the side of the van accusing me of robbing his house near by and wanting to be in the van to see what I had. He said the police were on the way but never showed up. Please be careful and don’t ever open the door to strangers!

  • 5/5

absolutely amazing park up! pretty tricky to get to, wouldn't want to meet someone coming the other way from either direction, but well worth it to get here! lovely walks along the manifold way in both directions and very close to Thor's cave. unfortunately there's absolutely no phone signal down there but not a deal-breaker

  • 5/5

Beautifully quiet and pitch black in the night. The valley on the way to Thor’s Cave was dreamy in the early morning hours.

  • 5/5

Incredible spot. Thor's cave is about 30 mins leisurely walk away. Dog walkers, bikers and hikers around as early as 5am. Very quiet during the night. Be aware that all roads leading there are very narrow and have low hanging tree branches. Would not recommend with anything larger than a small van.

  • 5/5

very good spot to park up, went during bank holidays and only three of us stayed overnight, very quiet and peaceful, would highly recommend if going to Thor's cave, can also walk to wetton from here and lovely pub there. no facilities, just parking spots. spaces fit our 4m van

  • 5/5

Gorgeous place to stay, I’d really recommend. I had it all to myself and just staying in a car I could tuck myself away so I was completely hidden from the road. The proximity to Thor’s cave is a huge selling point and the valley catches some beautiful morning sun as well. I’d really recommend and will definitely be back.

  • 5/5

Great spot to park for visiting thors cave , very remote and quiet no services whatsoever but makes it even more peaceful , roads are very narrow on way down with no passing places but I managed to get down in my 6.6m camper

  • 5/5

Stayed here Monday night very quiet, no bother Great location due to going up to thors cave Tuesday morning , no facilities or bins and no mobile service, but we loved the peacefulness of the place . road down to the carpark is narrow with not many passing passes but it wasn't very busy so not to much of a problem . will definitely use it again

  • 5/5

Excellent quiet spot! Can get just during the day, especially with people walking up and down the road but empties quickly come the evening. No facilities (toilets, showers, bins) and no cafes nearby so make sure you have everything you need. Will definitely be back ☺️

  • 5/5

Lovely quiet spot! Stayed here 2 night whilst visiting alton towers, and it was perfect. Only ever saw a few locals, and no one else was there when we stayed overnight. We approached from Gindle and, although steep, the road wasn't that bad. Thank you for this suggestion :)

  • 5/5

This is a nice quite spot in the middle of the valley. We were the only ones parked up here for our stay but had the occasional walkers go by in the morning. There is a steep narrow road to get to the park up but we managed it in our fairly large camper. No mobile signal even with our antenna.

  • 5/5

Great quiet spot. Stayed for 1 night only 1 other person staying the night there. Plenty of room. No signal.

  • 5/5

Stayed last night, lovely spot, large car park with tree coverage. A walk at the end of the car park which lead to thors cave, fairly quick walk, perfect location. No bother in the night. The road there is a bit windy and narrow, thought we were going the wrong way, but over a bridge and its there on the right hand side.

  • 5/5

Stayed last night, only motorhome in the carpark. If visiting approach from Gridon is easier than from Wetton. Great day walking the Manfold Trail, visiting Thors Cave and cycling along the NCN route which runs through the carpark.

  • 5/5

Stayed on Saturday night with only one other 'car camper'. Quiet is an understatement. No signal, no facilities, but such a peaceful location. Short walk to Thor's Cave well worth it. Anything bigger than my VW camper may be interesting on the roads.

  • 4/5

Great spot, narrow roads to get there but very peaceful and out of the way. We stayed on Monday night and had the place to ourselves. We enjoyed a lovely walk to Thor's cave, would highly recommend the walk up-great to explore and stunning views at the top!

  • 5/5

Beautiful spot, quite a lot of room too! Just a couple of other vans spread between the areas when we were there. Really lovely spot in the valley (no signal). A few walkers and cyclists in the morning along the main path but overall very peaceful!

  • 4/5

Great park up and short 30min walk away from Thor’s cave. Very tight roads either way down the valley to the carpark, with limited passing places. We were lucky and didn’t meet another vehicle but could have been a nightmare if we had. No signal.

  • 5/5

Roads are a bit tight to get down so be polite to locals and back up where you can I managed to squeeze my xlwb crafter into the pull in spots to allow passers by . very peaceful night was a couple of other vans down there also and wow what great views with a hike (no signal in carpark which was bliss)

  • 5/5

Great little gem!! Stayed one night no facilities. Stream running by the side. plenty of space. beautiful walk up to thors cave, ( you can get perfect signal at the top ). will visit again. Warning there is a very steep hill to get there no passing space drive slow and be nice and reverse if you know you can and take your time. drive down from the Grindon side. love it !

  • 4/5

Great spot stayed 30 June with one other Van. Got awaycwith drivingvin from Stanshope and luckily did not meet on coming vehicle. High verges and zero passing places. Advise arriving through Grindon as we exited that way. Bike trail was also great adfition as we cycled both ways from park up.

  • 5/5

Quiet, peaceful and lovely place to stay about a 20 minute walk from thors cave. The road we took to get down DID NOT seem right but we trusted our trusty sat nav and all was well. Would highly recommend and would certainly stay again

  • 4/5

Lovely quiet spot, 1 other van when we were there and some night walkers came at midnight, but very peaceful. Had a good night's sleep. There was absolutely no mobile phone coverage there, which was a bit of an issue for us as we had left our little girl at her granny's and we wanted to say goodnight, but other than that, perfect spot!

  • 4/5

Great stopover with access to lovely walks (inc Thor’s cave). Quiet at night and pitch black. Carpark gets busy during the day but clears early evening. We shared the whole carpark with two other campers. Access the carpark is via a narrow road and won’t be everyone’s cup of tea

  • 5/5

What an amazing place to explore and stay. No restrictions, level ground, ample parking and overall a great nights sleep. Not a drop of 3/4/5G but well worth the stay. Plenty of trials to hike or cycle. 7.5 ton limit and hairpin bends over the bridge. 10/10. Thor’s cave is a must see!

  • 5/5

Great parking spot, very quiet at night, lots of spaces too and hard ground.

  • 5/5

Spent New Year’s Eve here. Beautiful place. Very quiet at night. Easy 20 min walk to base of steep walk/steps up to Thor’s Cave. There isn’t any phone signal so it feels “back to nature “. Roads coming in are narrow but the views are superb. No bins, so please take all rubbish away with you. Will definitely be coming back.

  • 5/5

You can hear the river at night as it runs over a small weir. Very peaceful and quiet. We spent New Year’s Eve 2020 here. No one in car park after 5pm in December. Easy walks along paved footpath to Thor’s Cave, which is well worth a visit, then path continues upstream along river to the stepping stones near Ilam.

  • 5/5

Great night stay here the other day. It’s perfect little spot as it totally out the way, right next to the river & so peaceful. No phone Signal at all! It is tight roads & would only recommend coming from grindon. Does get a little busy in the day as it’s a 30min walk to Thor cave. Leek is only 15/20mins away too if you need to get food or supples. Definitely recommend this place & will definitely go back in the future.

  • 5/5

Fab little spot right on the manifold way, short walk to thors cave.. very quiet at night next to the river

  • 4/5

A good spot for an overnight stay, very quiet. absolutely no phone signal which is quiet nice really!!

  • 5/5

Great quite spot. Back to nature, no phone signal, sounds of the river and a lovely walk along the manifold way. Some spots for swimming if that's your thing towards Thors cave. As mentioned previously would suggest route from Grindon in anything bigger then a SWB or VW campervan.

  • 5/5

Steep in and out, but good location. Few kids having beers and a camp out on Saturday night, but at the other end so not much noise.

  • 5/5

Stayed here Saturday 10th October 2020, lovely drive through Grindon, the road down to manifold valley is narrow and steep but Ruby the T5 smashed it up and down. Lovely spot right next to the river, great 20 minute walk to Thors cave, when you get the dont forget to go ontop of the cave for beautiful views. I would definitely stay here again, plenty of space too!

  • 5/5

Excellent place for the night. narrow road getting to it but made it there with a large van.

  • 5/5

Stayed here 5-6th October 2020 and it was a perfect little spot. Very quiet, plenty of space for my SWB T5. Plenty of lovely walks for the dog too. I will be staying here again. Please make sure you leave it immaculate! There are no bins for rubbish so take it with you!

  • 5/5

Great place, although as it's already been said, it's a rather narrow road down! We approached from Wetton....would recommend approaching from Grindon as it's a far better road.

  • 5/5

Fabulously out of the way. No facilties, no noise, no signal, no anything. Will return.

  • 5/5

Steep narrow road on the way down, but lovely and quiet at night.

  • 5/5

Stayed here for a night very quite and enough room for a few vans when we turned up 5 vans were there with still plenty of room for more nice walks nearby definitely will be stopping here again

  • 5/5

Very peaceful, be aware there's no mobile signal at all! but a great stop!

  • 4/5

Half hour walk from Thor’s cave (steep and slippery but worth the walk!). Spent one quiet night here, space for quite a few vans.

  • 5/5

Always a great stop. Everyone we meet is friendly and helpful. Long walks along Manifold way but footpaths that circle the area are brilliant and challenging for the more adventurous. Don’t forget no internet or tv signal. No facilities. Don’t take anything larger than LWB HT panel van please. Take your rubbish home as no bins. Enjoy your stay. May see you there

  • 5/5

V narrow roads with hair pin turns, and steep hills but carpark was so private and quiet we enjoyed and will definitely return!! Some amazing views on the drive down to the car park too!

  • 5/5

Perfect spot for a free stay over so quite and peaceful

  • 5/5

Lovely spot for a night or 2. We use this as our nighttime base and travel around during the day. Very peaceful. And as reported no data or mobile signal. Spot on if that’s what you want!

  • 5/5

Brilliant parked overnight so quiet few cars next day around us but overall great spot

  • 4/5

Nice spot, plenty of space. Great when cafe is open. Nice walking around. No phone signal.

  • 5/5

I loved staying here, super beautiful and peaceful, the walk up to thor's Cave was lovely. No phone signal at all (except on top of the cave which also gives you an ace view). One reccomendation, when leaving the car park, turn right, away from the bridge and harepin bend, any larger vans will have a really tough time, the other way leads back onto a main road too.

  • 5/5

Nice quiet spot next to the river hard surface great shelter from the elements too, would go back again nice walk to thors cave

  • 5/5

Stayed here for a night, midweek in winter. A really great spot for exploring Thor’s cave, a twenty minute walk or so away. Roads are quite narrow and steep. On leaving in the morning, my van struggled with the hairpin climb out of Larkstone Lane, across the bridge, but we turned around no bother and headed back towards Grindon.

  • 5/5

Parked here and spent 1 night. Incredibly peaceful and beautiful, great place to cycle and walk from, worth going to Thor’s cave. We were the only people but could get busy in high season!

  • 4/5

Stayed here for 2 days / 1 night. lovely spot to stay, and was very quiet during the night. no facilities, so be warned/ prepared. there was an ice-cream / coffee truck during the office hours. During the day (NB we were there on a bank holiday weekend) the path / carpark was busy. walked a mile to the pub in Wetton which was nice. No internet or signal, but that was what I was after.

  • 4/5

Very quiet, dead end road. Ideal place to visit Thors cave and surrounding walks. Had a refreshment truck there at the time. Lane coming down is very narrow in an A class had a few brushes with foliage, there are a few passing places but would have struggled if we met anyone. No internet connection.

  • 5/5

Great walks and bike rides from here. Starry skies!
