Stonethwaite campsite located in the borrowdale valley. amazing location and only £8 per night. Track into the campsite can be abit hairy but the largest vehicle I've seen go down is a MWB sprinter. anything bigger you can ask the farmer to open the gates. Close proximity to fantastic walks and numerous swimming spots along the river that runs through. Pub within walking distance as well.

Super dog friendly, lots of space next to the river, facilities basic but clean, £10 per person per night & no charge for dogs. Definitely recommend this site if your looking for something wilder. Great pub within walking distance.

  • 5/5

£10 per person for the night, no showers, toilets (bring your own loo roll!) the track to get in is pretty rough and tight, but this campsite is absolutely gorgeous, you're right next to the stream and there's a beautiful waterfall a short walk away, really peaceful in our experience. stayed late September a Thursday and Friday night. They came around to collect payment around 8am

  • 5/5

Amazing location right on the river, beautiful scenery and will definitely be back. The road to it is a bit nervy but it's fine if you take it slow. Good prices and friendly owner with toilets on site too

  • 5/5

Price has gone up to £10 per person a night. Good campsite. Can walk to black moss pot.

  • 5/5

5 star for location. The road in is dicey, we took out 6.3m motorhome along track in and I would advise only if you are very confident but there is just about enough height clearance. Toilets are basic and no drinking water, it’s closer to wild camping. You can camp right next to river which is beautiful, not a spot you find to commonly. Worth a vist if your brave enough!

  • 4/5

£8 pp pn money was collected at 8am £5 day parking with honesty box Road in/out is narrow and bumpy but easily manageable taking your time, we went in a Renault Trafic SWB. No phone signal but WiFi at the pub at the end of the road which closed 10:30pm. Toilets on site. Stunning location once in and beautiful walk up to black moss pot with waterfalls and several spots to stop and swim.

Amazing views, very scenic. Road in was so dangerous and hard to find, no signal, toilet facilities were flooded when we went. There’s a tap but no safe drinking water (the water is yellow) sheep lose in the field where you camp. Left early cause didn’t feel safe, they came round 11pm for the money.

Hidden Gem! The track down is tricky buy managed fine in a VW LT. There is plenty of space to choose from, fresh water and a basic toilet block. Only a short walk back through fields to the local pub too! No phone signal which was a bonus and there is a lovely walk leading from the bottom field up to Galleny Force waterfall and through the Valley.

  • 4/5

A large campsite with plenty spots to pick from. A great location for starting hikes in to the hills. There are lockers on site and fresh water but no facilities to empty waste tanks etc. only downside is the track you drive on to access the park. We got a LWB Sprinter along the track so just take your time.

  • 5/5

Absolutely beautiful campsite with a lovely pub next to it. There’s a short and flat walk along the river (opposite direction the the pub) which comes to a waterfall and open water swimming - though it isn’t large it’s beautiful & you can jump in and climb out of easily. Please remember bug spray as we got a ton of bites! The lane to get to site is terrible and two cars wouldn’t be able to pass.

  • 5/5

would highly recommend this site. £8 per adult per night. £4 for children. I'm not gonna lie the drive up is not for faint hearted and it is very tight on the motorhome point but once there it's beautiful. very clean site except for the loo's they were unusable. would recommend taking insect repellant and DEFINITELY a head Ned for the evening because there was lots of mindies

  • 4/5

Beautiful spot, facilities basic but adequate. tricky road to get in but managed it fine in Vauxhall Vivaro, worth it when you do.

  • 4/5

beautiful spot along the river! very busy area. Honesty box to drop money into, We paid £20 for 2 adults 3 children (under 5s free) no phone signal whatsoever which isn’t a bad thing! No facilities, the road into the campsite is ridiculous. Really Rocky, really narrow, sharp edges, local camper damaged his camper van ok his way in on a tree, would be very difficult to access with a large van.

  • 4/5

Great location, road in and out wasn’t as tricky as some reviews make it out to be (swb Renault trafic), just be careful and take it slow. Facilities are basic (toilets and washing up) and not the cleanest, but functional enough. For 8pppn you really can’t complain. Pub looked good and only seemed a 10 minute walk away, but due to the driving rain we didn’t bother. Well worth the trip out there!

this is the most naturally stunning spot you could hope to stay, right in the river with amazing valleys and close to great hikes and walks. basic toilets and wash stations on site. the road in and out is tricky but nothing abit of careful driving can't solve ease don't let it put you off. great for the dog also but just be careful some sheep roam about from time to time. can't wait to go back

  • 5/5

One of the best sites in the area! Stunning spot, great swimming, good pub. Fantastic value at £8 pppn, didn't need facilities as I have it all on board. I had no trouble negotiating the access track in my Ducato 5.5m motorhome - full height and width....much to the consternation of the shiny new Discovery driver I caught up with midway along! Anything longer/low-slung and you'd struggle!

  • 5/5

One of my absolute favourite places in the world! Can get very busy now in the summer due to its (well-deserved!) popularity. Road up to the right as you’re going in can be quite hairy, but the lower road through the fields to the left are fine and are often open in summer when the overflow fields are opened.

  • 1/5

Beautiful but an absolute NIGHTMARE to get in and out of.

  • 5/5

Such a beautiful wild campsite with plenty of trees and a stream running through that eventually turns into fairy Glen and eventually black moss pit. However the price was £8 per adult and £4 per child aged 5 or over

  • 1/5

Beautiful setting but closed at the moment

  • 5/5

My favourite campsite in the world. I’ve been going for 40 years. Don’t forget a walk up the valley and a swim in the deep river pools. Heaven for me. No mobile cover, peaceful.

  • 5/5

What a beautiful spot along side the river with the hills overlooking, nice and quiet, simply perfection, my favourite spot whilst on my tour of the north by far!

  • 4/5

This map and sat nav shows the campsite off on the left hand side road but it is actually quite far up the road on the right. Based on the fact the road to the left stated it was closed I attempted the road on the right but I found it so narrow and dangerous I thought surely that couldn’t be the entrance! My boyfriend walked further up rather than taking the van and getting it stuck but the battery on his torch died before he could see anything. So I reversed back down. Not an easy feat! We put fresh batteries in the torch and he headed back up on foot. There is no signal at all (BT) but I managed to jump on someone’s WiFi at the bottom of the road and eventually came across a YouTube video titled the campsite entrance from hell so by the time he arrived back I realised that was the right track. He never made it to the top but he thought he has seen lights. So off we went up. I had read online about a sprinter getting up so I gathered I would manage as well. I did. Just. There wasn’t much room for manoeuvre at all. It was 1am before we arrived. We were conscious of disturbing people so just pulled in the first space we came across. We settled down and before we knew it it was 9am when the guy chapped the window. It was £8 per person. We were expecting a telling off for being late in, then we were taking time rooting about for money and I managed to set the alarm off in the van but he just waited patiently. The gentleman was very friendly. He had acknowledged we had made numerous calls at midnight but he gets frequent hoax calls so it is worth leaving a message so he knows it’s genuine if you do require any help at unsociable hours. We didn’t go hunting at night so for anyone who does arrive late the toilet facilities are after the entrance, follow the track down a bit and the facilities are on the left hand side. There was a hand sanitising station at the ladies entrance but it was empty. And no soap inside. But there was toilet roll. It’s our first camping experience so I’m not sure what you would expect but just a heads up for people so that they take their own stuff down with them. There are no shower facilities as far as I noticed. We were pleasantly surprised by where we found ourselves in the morning. A beautiful, quiet and peaceful area. The only thing that would put me off staying again is definitely the track. I was terrified all morning of leaving incase we met someone else on their way in. Luckily we didn’t!!

Fantastic low key campsite, basic facilities. Great walks and fantastic river to enjoy. No phone signal on THREE network, which adds to the feel of wilderness
