A large lay by/small carpark just off cliff road. By evening/night there are a lot of loud cars racing up and down until about midnight. Surrounded by beautiful cliffs and just opposite a small cave. Might be hard to park during the day but by late afternoon/evening there’s usually space! Just a 5 minute walk down into cheddar with toilets and shops/tourist attractions. There’s a trail to the west of the carpark leading you 20 mins up to a beautiful viewpoint overlooking the whole of cheddar.

I’d recommend avoiding. Turned up on a Saturday evening 7pm and there were four police cars parked up along the road. This is because it’s a popular boy racer spot. Loud cars present obviously waiting for the police to leave so they can drive. Shame as it’s a beautiful spot and would be quiet otherwise. No mobile signal

  • 2/5

I stayed on a Saturday and wouldn’t recommend. Despite the location being gorgeous, there were people racing fast cars with loud exhausts until way past midnight. Not only that but this spot was full of spectators watching the cars and partying right next to my car. I can imagine it’s beaut during the week tho. Please take your trash with you! It was a mess.

My partner and I car camped here for 1 night, extremely beautiful, lush veiws, we were woken by the goats surrounding the car. as others have mentioned the "boy racers" this did not bother us as we are petrol heads anyway, they only came to the coach turning point & back down again. this stopped by 11:00pm. Theres a small cave opposite, and a beautiful walk behind leading to black rock.

Great spot, got woken up by goats so was nice.

Lovely place to park. There's quite a few lay-bys throughout the Gorge but this one was the safest as you could park further back from the road. I stayed on a Monday and Tuesday night (making sure to leave throughout the day), both nights with racers but everything goes quiet by 10:30pm at the latest so wasn't a big deal. It's also a nice walk through the Gorge down to Cheddar.

Lovely park up area, cars going up and down until 10:30pm then quite night and was quite in the morning until 8:30 would recommend

Stayed here for 2 nights (Sun and Mon nights) on the Sun they were about 200 boy racers, at the lower car parks. Hardly drove past us, they came up to the coach turning, which is opposite, then back down. Didn't really disturb us and they were gone by half 10. On Mon night they were gone before it went dark, just a couple came past in the afternoon. 20 minute walk to Cheddar and the free toliets.

If you want a peaceful stopover, this isn't the place, unfortunately. The road is so busy with general traffic and boy racers. It's such a shame because the scenery is incredible. I planned on staying the night, but after a walk and explore, I ended up moving on from here because of the road noise and I also got no phone signal whatsoever.

  • 2/5

Stayed here last night 2nd time here. The boy racers were out in force until gone 1 a.m the noise really bad. Also by the side of us was a range rover with a tent on top. Left the area in a bad way. Left soiled Toilet paper everywhere.

  • 3/5

Such a shame there is no decent parking for motorhomes. We tried the car parks in town, but they are 5 metres max (we are 6m). This spot seemed the best option, no overhanging rocks or parking bays etc. Still slightly sloped. The boy racers were already going up and down the road videoing at 5pm. Though no hassle other than noise. Suggest get there early or after 5pm to get a spot.

  • 4/5

Great views, nice place to park but noisy at night. Few guys with cars and motorcycles making race. Week days should be fine.

  • 4/5

This was fine for us for one night. Quite exposed by the road but no one gave us trouble. A couple of boy racers early on in the evening but was quiet by 9pm. It was a Tuesday evening so perhaps we just got lucky. No network.

  • 4/5

There were lots of little lay-bys to park the van at night through the gorge. We found one which felt private. I echo the comments about some fast cars speeding up at night, but we managed to sleep well. It’s quite dark as the cliffs overhang the road, meaning you can see less light. Nonetheless a good little spot in Cheddar for the night. I probably would only stay one night.

  • 4/5

Like the other comments state… boy racers. They go up & down the gorge all night where they turn around at the coach turning point, just a stones throw from this spot. Very annoying, but it is beautiful place to spend the night. Once they stopped driving up and down (about midnight), it was fine. Woke up to goats walking past the van which was cool. Other vans parked along side us so felt secure.

Overnighted here on 08 Aug 2023 along with two other vans. Beautiful off-the-grid overnight location. We had a couple of boy racers early evening but enjoyed a peaceful night.

  • 5/5

Great place to stay!! Beautiful surroundings and plenty of space for quite a few vehicles. Not exactly flat and a few pot holes but flat enough didn’t notice when I slept. Few motorbikes and loud cars until about 9/10pm but then not woken up at all. Definitely would stay again

  • 5/5

  • 4/5

Lovely view. But had to move to the car park in town to actually get some sleep because of the boy racers!

  • 4/5

What a view to wake up to it the morning. As many of the other reviews stated, the boy racers are rife until about midnight. It's so lovely when they're not around. There's also goats everywhere, which are pretty impressive to watch.

  • 5/5

Great spot, within walking distance to the gorge and the town. Was some kid racers until about 10pm, but was pretty quiet after that.

  • 5/5

Boy racers until 23.00, totally fine after that. Engines rumble in the echoey gorge but very sleep-able. Only one other camper in the morning, though cars began parking around 7am.

  • 5/5

  • 4/5

Boy racers was not a problem. Lovely little quiet spot just for the night if you are looking to spend the day at the cheddar gorge. Would definitely go back

  • 3/5

Lovely scenic area, spent a Monday night here, boy racers were up and down till about midnight but qiuet after. People walking around after midnight was a bit sketchy. Someone performed a horn drive by at 7am, didn't affect me as I'm an early riser. I imagine on Friday night and weekend it would be noisy with the boy racers. I'll return, but perhaps not spend the night again....

  • 5/5

Stayed a while back (1st ever night out in our old Transit) :) fantastic place (boys racers were short lived that night lol) also witnessed amazing goat decent, a group of goats came down from the top & what would have been impossible for us with out ropes :)

  • 2/5

This is a nice spot but it is ruined by all the boy racers. It was a Saturday night when we stayed so it might be different in the week. The Lay-by on the a39 was quieter then here.

  • 5/5

Excellent stop over arrived about 9pm drove through boyracers at bottom of the gorge found a spot across from the coach turning point

  • 5/5

Stunning spot .10 min walk to Chedder . Steep on way back , but can stop if need too , enjoy views on way .Yes odd boy racer but not near us. Left to enjoy view and peace with the sheep! Would love to return .

Toilets a 5 minute walk into cheddar. Lovely locals. Parking spots jotted about all down cliff road but this one was perfect for us.
